Here's a beautiful, top-of-the-line Style A Professional carved-top acoustic mandolin from Lyon & Healy of Chicago, among the finest carved mandolins ever produced.
It has the asymmetrical 2-point body and shorter “classical” scale of Style A mandolins produced after 1921. Spruce top; flamed maple back and sides, mahogany neck, extended ebony fretboard with 13" scale, and 5-ply body binding. Scroll headstock, vulcanized fiber pickguard, and lyre tailpiece. Tailpiece and pickguard bear their respective patent dates (pickguard: Nov. 12, 1918; tailpiece: Apr. 15, 1919) There is no pull-out rest. Serial number 2335 is both written on the label and stamped inside the rim.
Owned, played, and kept in beautiful shape for years by one of Seattle’s top-flight musicians, this mandolin has the typical dry yet sweet Lyon & Healy tone prized by players of classical and Italian popular music, and is ideal for use in a mandolin orchestra.
