Gibson A4, 1924, acoustic. $6,000.
Here's a seductively charming 1924 Gibson A4 snakehead mandolin.
Serial number is 75907, indicating that it was shipped in early 1924,
and FON is 11897, which indicates assembly in late 1923. Original hardshell case whose handle has received the
common electrical tape recovering. Appears to have the original tailpiece, pickguard, endpin,
and Waverly tuners with arrow-end plates.
The adjustable bridge base wears the correct patent date stamp for
an original bridge. However, there is a spare saddle in the case and the
saddle that's installed looks suspiciously clean, so I think it is
likely a replacement. Frets appear original and in good condition.
Extended fretboard, enticing sunburst spruce top, and 2-piece birch back. A tiny crack under the pickguard has been glued and cleated with fabric on the inside. Full-bodied, complex voice. Straight neck (with truss rod) and low action.
There are some bumps, scrapes and finish imperfections, mostly on the back. Nothing out of the ordinary for a 102-year-old mandolin. It would sound terrific in any style of music.
