Gibson EM200
Gibson Florentine EM200, 1964. $2,500.
I haven't had the opportunity to sell a Gibson EM200 in quite a while, and here's a very nice one.
The EM200 Electric Florentine was built for only 18 years and doesn't seem to exist in large numbers, but certainly punches above its weight in looks, performance, and reputation. If you've thought about buying a vintage electric mandolin at all, you've thought about buying an EM200.
This one bears a serial number of 65572 stamped into the back of the headstock, which dates it to 1964. It comes in the original yellow-lined rectangular hardshell case with Gibson badge intact. Bridge, tailpiece base, and tone and volume knobs are original. The gold tailpiece cover, although not original, is a genuine Gibson period replacement obtained from a well-known vintage parts dealer. The gold Kluson tuners are new replacements, although the originals are in the case. Electronics, including the pickup, are in good shape and working correctly. Solid mahogany 2-point body in sunburst finish; mahogany neck; ebony fretboard and headplate. Binding on top and fretboard. Rosewood adjustable bridge with brass saddle. Four-pole P-90 single-coil pickup with wraparound pickguard.
The best news about this EM200 is its overall condition. So many instruments of this vintage have been knocked around a lot and/or have extensive lacquer checking. This one has escaped that fate. It's not pristine by any means, but the finish is in exceptional shape for a 60-year-old instrument. And it can all be yours for $2,500 plus shipping.
