Oasis
Oasis 5-string. $2,200.
In the early 1970s luthier Gary Cooper worked for Alembic Guitars, the California company known for its innovative basses. Later he struck out on his own and started Oasis, building guitars, basses, and at least one mandolin, namely this one. He was also employed as a repair tech at Skip’s Music in Sacramento until his death in 2001 in a car accident. Since Skip’s is the home of two of the most famous 5-string mandolins in history (the Bigsby and Roberts that belonged to Tiny Moore), it's tempting to consider that Gary might have had a chance to look those over before he built this one.
Serial number 4510. The 2-point body is carved from a solid block of koa, with ivoroid top binding. The 3-piece set neck is maple with what appears to be a mahogany center strip, and has a truss rod. Rosewood fretboard and Schaller tuners; custom brass bridge and tailpiece. Tone and volume controls. Koa heel cap and headplate with Oasis logo. The pickup is a vintage Bartolini Hi-A.
There are a few Oasis guitars and basses floating around out there, but I’ve never seen another mandolin. This is a rare, rare bird. There is some player wear and small scratches, including on the back of the headstock. Overall it has been well kept, but the top binding has shrunk and is starting to detach, and it is due for a fret job. I've reduced the asking price to account for those issues. Hardshell case included. See more photos, call 425/772-0231, or for more information. 48-hour approval period. $2,200 plus shipping.
